Gamescom 2026 highlighted a significant shift in the global games industry: developers from China and South Korea are becoming increasingly visible in premium, large-scale game development.

Niko Partners counted more than 20 games from China- and Korea-based developers during Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 26. The company noted that these studios are expanding beyond the mobile and MMO categories where many Asian publishers have traditionally been strongest.

New projects included titles from companies such as miHoYo and Krafton, alongside a broader range of premium, multiplatform and genre-diverse games.

This development matters to Southeast Asia even though the studios themselves are primarily Chinese and Korean.

Regional players are exposed to increasingly sophisticated Asian-made games, which can raise expectations around production quality, art direction, storytelling and cross-platform experiences.

For a Malaysia-focused platform such as WINMYR Malaysia, the trend is useful to observe because Southeast Asian developers operate in the same attention economy.

Local studios may not need to match AAA budgets, but they can learn from how Asian publishers build original IP, invest in long-term production and target international audiences.

The success of large Asian titles may also create more opportunities for regional outsourcing, localization, animation and technical services.

However, the key lesson is not that every studio should build an expensive AAA game.

A stronger takeaway is that Asian game development is becoming more diverse.

For WINMYR, this signals a broader change in digital entertainment: regional audiences are increasingly comparing local and international products within the same high-quality ecosystem.
